Professor Ukachukwu Aloysius Awuzie, fnia, of Umuzike, Orlu, Orlu Lga, Imo State was born 60 years ago at the Holy Rosary Maternity, Orlu. He attended St. Martins School, Owerri Ebeiri, Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu College of Immaculate Conception; Enugu University of Nigeria, Enugu, Campus  and University of Massachusetts, Amherst, U.S.A. From these Institutions, he gained his FLSC with Distinction, WASC with Division One Distinction, B.Arch. 2nd Class Upper Division and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA). Apart  from the outstanding brilliance from His academic records, it is most remarkable that from His primary School through to His Master’s Degree (B. Arch and MLA)  he read on Scholarships, Umuzike Town Union, Isu County Council scholarship, to the Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship for His Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies. He was a foundation Scholar of University of Nigeria and Recipient of University of Massachusetts Scholarship for Academic excellence.

After Stint in the private sector, he joined the services of Imo State University in 1985, and in 1996 he became the first Nigerian Professor of Land scape Architecture. He has a  lot of academic publications to his credit. Professionally, Prof. Awuzie is a registered Architect and a Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Architects  and Member International Federation of Landscape Architects (IPLA).

National Chairman, Association of Architectural Educators (AARCHES) in Nigeria 2007-2012. He has been Dean College of Engineering and Environmental Studies (twice), Member Governing council of Imo state University (twice) external examiner to many Universities and Polytechnics and Member of many professional bodies including the International Federation of Landscape Architects.

Today, Professsor Awuzie is known more in Nigeria for his brilliant performance as the President of the Academic Staff Union  of  Universities (ASUU)  (2008-2012). As a Professor of Landscape architecture, his leadership changed for good the landscape of University education in Nigeria. National Chairman, Association of Architectural Educators 2007-2012. President of Rotary club of Okigwe 1993. Supervised many graduate Students and published many academic works and creative works.

An accomplished Union Leader, he was Chairman ASUU, Imo State University, Owerri 2000-2004, National Financial Secretary of ASUU, 2004-2008 and President 2008-2012 and currently a member of the 7th Governing Council of the Imo State University Owerri which was inaugurated on January 17th, 2013.

Despite all these, Prof. Awuzie, born at Holy Rosary Maternity had held unto the Rosary as a constant prayer companion. He is a Knight of St. Mulumba from 1993 till date and recipient of  many Church awards.

Prof. Awuzie is happily married to Nneoma Lady Ethel-Rose Awuzie and the marriage is blessed with five children.

Despite the academic corruption and institutionalized acts of brigandage against the collective psychology of our nation, Prof. Awuzie is being celebrated as a man of honour and integrity. THE SUN in its ICON’s Publication described Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie as an ICON, and A Man of Character.
