FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Conducting excellent research and creating the next generation of science talent in Nigeria have never been more important. The school ensures it delivers high-quality, research-enriched learning and teaching programs which offer students the opportunity to pursue a career in an allied health profession; in a corporate role in health; or as academics/health sciences researchers and to increase participation of students from culturally and socially diverse backgrounds in order to build a health workforce appropriate for Australia’s social and cultural diversity. The Faculty of health sciences accomplishes both of these, playing a key role in Nigeria’s ability to compete scientifically on the world stage.
The Faculty of Health Sciences is headed by Professor. J.N.B Nnadozie (a Professor of Optometry). The Faculty of Health Sciences is made up of three Departments, namely:
1. Department of Optometry
2. Department of Medical Laboratory Science
3. Department of Nursing Science
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates seeking admission into the health science faculty, through this mode of admission shall posses a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or its equivalent with credit in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and English language at ONE sitting with a relevant pass in the joint matriculation examination (JME).
DIRECT ENTRY
Candidates for direct admission, in addition to satisfying the minimum entry requirements through JAMB, shall possess any of the following:
i. B.Sc. degrees or Higher National diploma (HND) in Bio-chemistry, Microbiology or other related courses.
ii. A pass in general certificate of education at advanced level in physics, chemistry and biology (or Zoology) with a minimum of five (5) credits as in UME mode of admission.
For candidates seeking admission into the nursing science department,
Candidate much have an appropriate pass in UME examination of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB). In addition, the candidate much hold WASSCE/ SSCE/ GCE or its equivalent with at least credit in 5 subjects (at not more than two sittings) including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
DIRECT ENTRY FOR THE NURSING SCIENCE
a. Candidate with Registered Nurse certificate much have five credits at ordinary level which much include English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at credit level at not more that two sittings.
b. Candidates with GCE Advanced level certificate much also have appropriate pass in the screening test of the University.
c. Degree holders in science disciplines must have not less than second class honours.
Direct entry students will be placed at 200 level of study. The non-nursing qualified direct entry students will be expected to sit for at least 2 professional examinations like UME candidates. Already trained nurses can sit for the professional examination not already possessed.
