INSTITUTE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMME (ICEP)

The Institute of Continuing Education Programme, Imo State University, Owerri offers degree and diploma programmes. The degree programmes are in the disciplines of Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Economics, Management, Marketing, Nursing Administration, Government and Public Administration and Mass Communication. But the diploma programmes are offered in all the disciplines above with the exception of nursing Administration and Law. Each of the degree programmes is for duration of between 4 and 5 years with the exception of Nursing Administration of which the duration is three years due to the possession of Higher Diploma equivalent certificate by the candidates.
Philosophy and Objectives
The philosophy of all the various disciplines is derived from just the National Philosophy of education as contained in Section 1, paragraph 1 of the national Policy on Education. The national philosophy aims precisely at having:
1. A free and democratic society
2. A just and egalitarian society
3. A united, strong and self-reliant nation
4. A great and dynamic economy
5. A land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens
Based on the above national philosophy, the Institute of Continuing Education Programme is out with the following:
1. To promote the acquisition of knowledge and skills for national development by Nigerian and non-Nigerian who are in great demand for it and to further their studies to obtain higher degree in the chosen fields of study.
2. To foster good fellowship and understanding among the people of various ethnic groups in Nigeria no matter the sex, age, background and interest.
3. To conduct and promote research and scholarship on continuing and distance education related issues in Nigeria.
4. To provide retooling opportunities and information on continuing and distance education related issues in Nigeria through the holding of conferences, seminars and so on, for the generality of workers both in the public and private sectors of the economy.
5. To develop, benefit and strengthen international, regional and local cooperation among institutions interested in organizing distance education programme through the whole world.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The admission requirement for Bachelor’s degree programme in all disciplines includes the five credit level passes in SSCE, GCE or its equivalent at not more than two sittings, in all business courses, the credit passes must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics. For Nursing Administration, the credit passes must include English Language, Mathematics and Biology. For Mass Communication, it must include credit passes in English Language, Literature in English and pass in Mathematics. And for Government and Public Administration, it must include credit passes in English Language, Government or History. To the diploma courses candidates, they must obtain three credit passes in the relevant subjects. However, special consideration may be given to mature, very experienced and some candidates with a good A/L or O/L papers.
