Introduction

A strong agricultural base has been recognized as the foundation upon which economic and technological growth and development of any nation depend. It is against this backdrop that the National University Commission (NUC) directed that Agricultural programme in Nigeria Universities should be planned to be broad based, particularly at the undergraduate level. Students in the Department of Crop Science and Biotechnology are exposed and protected. Also, the students would offer courses that shall expose them to other areas of Agriculture such as: Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, Animal Science and Environmental, Fisheries, Food Science and Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Forestry and Wild-Life Conservation.

Philosophy and Objectives

The Department of Crop Science and Biotechnology of Imo State University is based on the philosophy of developing appropriate manpower for increased crop production through direct participation in crop Science cultivation. However, the major objective is the production of Crop Science and Biotechnology also Graduates who would engage themselves not only in direct and profitable crop production but also contribute meaningfully in research activities to alleviate problems militating against crop production in Nigeria.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

In addition to having an acceptable pass in UTME, a candidate seeking admission to the degree programme in Crop Science and Biotechnology must obtain in not more than two sittings, credit passes in 5 WASCE/GCE/NECO subjects including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, at least a pass in Physics. The credit pas in Agricultural Science must be backed up at least a pass in Biology.

Direct Entry:

Holders of OND or NCE in agriculture or related discipline with minimum of upper credit plus five (5) credit WASCE/GCE/NECO ‘O’ level may be considered for direct admission into the 200 Level of the programme, while holders of HND with not less than merit pass may be admitted into the 300 level of the programme provided such candidates has met the minimum UTME requirements.
